Welcome to Maconaquah School Corporation Food and Nutrition Services. The Federal Government passed new regulations in January 2012 regarding the contents of school lunches beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.
We are now required to serve larger portions of fruits and vegetables. We must offer 1/2 cup of dark green vegetables, 3/4 - 1 1/4 cups of red/orange vegetables, 1/2 cup of legumes (beans), 1/2 cup of starchy vegetables, 1/2 - 3/4 cup of other vegetables, and 1- 1 1/2 cups of additional vegetables from any category. The amount served depends on the grade level of the student. Students in ALL grades must take no less than 1/2 cup of fruit and/or vegetables.
You can go to www.choosemyplate.gov and look under the My Plate tab to see what qualifies under these categories. The students will be seeing new items this year, and we ask you to encourage your son/daughter to try them out.
In addition, requirements such as minimum and maximum calorie limits have been specified per grade as well as a maximum percentage of saturated and fats and sodium. No trans fats are allowed unless they are naturally occurring, such as those in meat products. Other changes include the milk that we serve. We are only allowed to offer 1% white milk or fat free (skim) white or flavored milks.
If you have any questions about the new challenge to educate students on developing healthy eating habits, please feel free to contact me or any of the building level cafeteria managers. We will be happy to answer your questions.
